Frequently Asked Questions

What is PublicAccess?

PublicAccess is an application produced by CAPS Solutions. It enables users to search, select, view and comment on Local Authority data over the Internet. The information that is available through PublicAccess comes direct from the Local Authority computer records.

What information does PublicAccess contain?

The PublicAccess application contains planning, building and property information. Users may search and view properties and property history details as well as review and comment on current Applications.

Information may be retrieved through the PublicAccess Application search, property search or by directly selecting properties from a map. Customised searches may be performed using the advanced search function.

How is PublicAccess best viewed?

PublicAccess is best viewed using Internet Explorer version 5.5 or above. The reason for this is that PublicAccess needs to be run in a web browser that supports specific JavaScript functionality.

We would recommend a screen resolution of 1024 by 768 (with a minimum resolution of 800 by 600) and at least 256 colours. Different settings may restrict your viewing of PublicAccess.

How do I use PublicAccess?

PublicAccess has been designed to be as simple and easy to use as possible. There are a number of features that are used to ensure this application is easy to use and navigate around.

The PublicAccess home page contains a number of quick links to help you navigate into the required area of the application. Otherwise, use the menu bar on the left hand side of the screen to access a particular area of the application. In addition, navigation links are provided along the top of the page.

Personal details inaccurate, changed or sensitive?

Personal details such as the name and address of applicants, agents or those making contributions by commenting on a planning application are included in application data or on applications documents scanned and placed online. If any of these details are inaccurate or have changed, they can be corrected straight away. The planning application process is transparent and open, to show that decisions are being made for proper planning reasons, but consideration will be given to any special circumstances that might make personal information so sensitive that protecting personal information outweighs this requirement, for example to keep confidential the address of a person who is the subject of harassment. Please write a letter, clearly marked "confidential" to the Development Control Business Manager, setting out which personal details should be corrected or with any request for us to remove any personal details from the website and/or public file, with a full explanation of why this is required. The address can be found on the Sheffield City Council website
